Erik Satie
Vexations (1893) complete performance with 32 pianists
First published by Cage in 1949, this work was long considered a joke until Cage organized the first performance in 1963. Eric Satie, a composer Cage idolized, asked that three bars of music – less than a page – be repeated 840 times. Jacaranda’s rare complete performance will employ 32 pianists playing successively without pause. The audience is free to come and go as space permits and are encouraged to bring cushions for casual seating.

Jacaranda, music at the edge
Jacaranda is a series of intimate concert adventures into the realm of new and rarely heard classical music designed to awaken curiosity, passion & discovery. The 2012-13 season opens October 20 with a program of Steve Reich, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and others.
CAGE 100 - Jacaranda is celebrating the centenary of John Cage with a 4-day festival at four Santa Monica venues. Cage spent his young adulthood in Santa Monica and debuted his earliest music at the Santa Monica Bay Women's Club. The festival will open Thursday night at First Presbyterian of Santa Monica, continue at Miles Playhouse and the Women's Club, and end Sunday afternoon at the Annenberg Beach House. Two concerts are free. Artists and repertoire are subject to change.
TWO FREE CONCERTS!

Ten Thousand Things - Saturday, September 8, 8 pm, Santa Monica Bay Woman's Club
The simultaneous performance of five Cage works for solo musicians, often discussed by Cage as a work "in progress" called Ten Thousand Things, is the featured work on this evening receiving its world premiere. Cage's last "expressive" work Perilous Night will be performed by pianist Aron Kallay. Special guest speaker Eric Smigel will introduce the works and discuss Cage's years in Santa Monica. Musicians include John Schneider, voice; Tom Peters, double Bass, Kallay & Vicki Ray, playing prepared piano, and percussionist TBA. Admission $25
Prepared Piano Classic - Sunday, September 9, 4:30 pm, Annenberg Beach House
